This trip began with an invitation from a client to canoe and camp 65 miles of a rarely traveled section of the Missouri River in northern Montana — the Missouri Breaks. “Break” is a term coined by Captain Lewis of the Lewis & Clark Expedition of Discovery. Lewis observed that in this section of the Missouri, the land eroded revealing precipitous white cliffs. He wrote that the land appeared to “break”.
Never having had any interest in Lewis & Clark, I invited a friend who was passionate about their Voyage of Discovery. He gave an enthusiastic “yes”, and asked if we could tack on a couple weeks out to his home state of South Dakota and back to which I quickly agreed.
For 18 days we were in one place longer than 24 hours, only once. Every night a new campsite or hotel. It gets to you after awhile.
